The Read Conmigo Mission
The mission of Read Conmigo is to enrich the learning environment for children by providing parents with tools and resources to improve their families’ reading habits and to foster a lifelong love of reading. La misión de Read Conmigo es enriquecer el ambiente de aprendizaje para los niños, ofreciendo a los padres las herramientas y los recursos para fomentar el hábito de leer e inculcar el amor por la lectura.El regalo más valioso que le puede dar a un hijo es su tiempo. Leer juntos, en cualquier idioma, establece la base para un futuro con éxito. Los maestros saben que el apoyo y la participación de los padres ayudan a construir el camino para que los niños obtengan buenas calificaciones.Read Conmigo es un primer paso, simple, para el éxito. Por favor, acepte esta invitación a leer con su hijo.
“Ding, Dong!” Grandmother Gloria was at the door. She had come over to babysit Juan. His parents were going out to dinner.
“¡Din, Don!” La abuela Gloria estaba en la puerta. Venía a cuidar a Juan, porque sus padres iban a salir a cenar.
Juan loved spending time with Grandmother Gloria. They took turns drawing silly pictures of each other. They made a pirate ship with bed sheets and chairs. They ate pizza and watched a movie.
A Juan le encantaba estar con la abuelita Gloria. Se turnaban para hacer dibujos graciosos de ellos mismos. Hicieron un barco pirata con sábanas y sillas. Comieron pizza y vieron películas.
Right before it was time to sleep, Grandmother Gloria usually read him a story. But this time, something very strange happened. “Tonight, I will not read you a story,” she said. Juan thought she was joking, but Grandmother Gloria was serious. “Why not?” he asked. “I want you to read me this story,” she said handing him a book from the shelf. Juan was not happy at all. “I don’t need to read,” he huffed. “What are you going to do when you grow up?” asked Grandmother Gloria. Juan thought for a moment and said, “Oh, I don’t need to read because I am going to be a …..”
Justo antes de irse a dormir, la abuela Gloria acostumbraba leerle un cuento a Juan. Pero esta vez sucedió algo extraño. "Esta noche, no te voy a leer", dijo la abuela. Juan pensó que bromeaba, pero la abuela Gloria hablaba en serio. “¿Por qué no?” preguntó Juan. “Quiero que seas tú quien lea este cuento” dijo mientras le entregaba un libro. Juan no estaba nada contento. “No necesito leer” dijo Juan enojado. “¿Qué vas a hacer cuando seas grande?” preguntó la abuela Gloria. Juan pensó por un momento y dijo: “¡Ah!, no necesito leer porque voy a ser un…”
“…BAKER! I am going to bake cakes and oatmeal cookies and doughnuts.” Juan could almost smell the cookies. “Everything will taste delicious!”
“…¡PANADERO! Voy a hornear pasteles y galletas de avena y donas”. Juan casi podía oler las galletas. “¡Todo sabrá delicioso!”
“But how are you going to bake if you can’t read the recipes?” asked Grandmother Gloria. Juan had not thought about that. The oatmeal cookies would probably not taste good. Juan thought for a moment and said, “I don’t need to read because I am going to be a…”
“¿Pero cómo vas a hornear si no puedes leer las recetas?” preguntó la abuela Gloria. Juan no había pensado en eso. Las galletas de avena probable-mente no tendrían muy buen sabor. Juan pensó por un momento y dijo: “No necesito leer porque voy a ser un…”
“...BUS DRIVER! I am going to drive people all over the city.” Juan pretended to drive. “I will take people to the park, to the museum, and to work!”
“…¡CONDUCTOR DE AUTOBÚS! Voy a transportar a la gente por toda la ciudad”. Juan pretendió manejar. “¡Llevaré a la gente al parque, al museo y al trabajo!”
“But how are you going to know where to go if you can’t read the street signs?” asked Grandmother Gloria. Juan had not thought about that. He might get lost and the passengers would not be happy. Juan thought for a moment and said, “I don’t need to read because I am going to be a …”
“¿Pero, cómo vas a saber adónde ir si no puedes leer los letreros de la calle?” preguntó la abuela Gloria. Juan no había pensado en eso. Podría perderse y a los pasajeros no les agradaría eso. Juan pensó por un momento y dijo: “No necesito leer porque voy a ser un…”
“…VETERINARIAN! I am going to take care of all kinds of animals!” Juan pretended to check his cat’s heartbeat. “People will bring me their cats, dogs, and birds! I will give them medicine and make sure they are all healthy!”
“…¡VETERINARIO! ¡Voy a cuidar a toda clase de animales!” Juan pretendía revisar los latidos del corazón de su gato. “¡La gente me traerá a sus gatos, perros y pájaros! ¡Les daré medicina y me aseguraré que estén sanos!”
“But how are you going to know what medicine to give the animals if you can’t read the labels?” asked Grandmother Gloria. Juan had not thought about that either. The animals would get sicker if they got the wrong medicine. Juan thought for a while. “Aha! I don’t need to read because I am going to be a…”
“¿Pero, cómo vas a saber qué medicina darle a los animales si no puedes leer las etiquetas?” preguntó la abuela Gloria. Juan tampoco había pensado en eso. Los animales empeorarían con la medicina equivocada. Juan pensó por un rato. “¡Ajá! No necesito leer porque voy a ser un…”
“…GRANDFATHER!” He was sure that Grandmother Gloria would have nothing more to say. “I am going to have grandkids, just like you Grandmother Gloria! I am going to jump on the bed with them and eat pizza! My grandkids will think I am the best grandfather in the world!”
“….¡ABUELO!” Estaba seguro que la abuela Gloria no tendría nada más que decir. “¡Voy a tener nietos, así como tú Abuelita Gloria! ¡Voy a saltar en la cama con ellos y comer pizza juntos! ¡Mis nietos pensarán que soy muy divertido!”
“But,” asked Grandmother Gloria, “What are you going to do when your grandkids ask you to read them a story?” Juan had definitely not thought about this. His grandkids will not be able to sleep without a story. Who would teach them to read? Juan said, “I need to learn to read because I am going to be…”
“Pero,” preguntó la abuela Gloria, “¿qué vas a hacer cuando tus nietos te pidan que les leas un cuento?” Juan definitivamente no había pensado en eso. Sus nietos no podrían irse a dormir sin un cuento. ¿Quién les enseñaría a leer? Juan exclamó: “¡Necesito aprender a leer porque voy a ser…”
“… the BEST GRANDFATHER in the world!” Grandmother Gloria kissed Juan on the forehead. “But for now,” added Grandmother Gloria, “you can just be the best grandson in the world!” Juan opened his book and started to read with Grandmother Gloria’s help.
“… el MEJOR ABUELO del mundo!” La abuela Gloria besó a Juan en la frente. “Pero por ahora,” añadió la abuela Gloria, “sólo puedes ser el mejor nieto del mundo”. Juan abrió su libro y comenzó a leer con la ayuda de la abuela Gloria.

ALMA SANCHEZ current
ly resides in Houston, TX with her husband, Juan. They have four remarkable children: Diana, Esther, Johnny and Moises plus two cats. She volunteers as a director for the New Life Kids Ministry at her church. As a homeschooling mom, she has the opportunity to spend valuable time with her children who motivate her to create stories that embrace moral lessons.
FRANCIS QUINTERO currently resides in Los Angeles, California. She just recently graduated with a B.A. in Media Arts and Animation from the Art Institute of Orange County. Illustrating has always been a huge past time for her. In her spare time she especially enjoys sketching and drawing comics. I Don’t Need to Read is her debut as a children’s book illustrator. Creating stories and art is what she enjoys the most and she hopes to put more of her art work out into the world.
