This story is about a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig who lives in Henderson, Nevada, and her special quest.
Sarah was a Vietnamese pot bellied pig that lived in Henderson Nevada. She had her own yard in the back of the house. It was a nice yard, part of it grassy, part of it weedy and part with flowers. But her favorite part of it was the sandbox where Gene and Yvonne would put small onion sets. She would go in and root them out with her nose and eat them. It was always fun to root down in the sand and find a treasure! Gene and Yvonne had adopted Sarah when she was just a small piglet and she had grown very fond of them. She had started her life with them in the house sleeping in a basket by their bedside. As time went on Sarah began spending more and more time outside and thoroughly enjoyed it. She liked her yard, the fresh air and all the sounds and smells of the outdoors. Sometimes Sarah would run through the sprinklers to cool off in the hot days and then roll around in the mud that the water had made. She would lie in the sun and root around her yard for new treasures. She had a wonderful life but as she got older and time progressed she started to become bored. She would lie on her belly, on her side, kick her feet and wander around the house but the things she normally enjoyed so much started to become not enough for Sarah.
One day as she was rooting around her yard she heard sounds that were unfamiliar. She had often heard noises on the other side of the fence that sounded intriguing but she could never see anything because the fence was solid wood. Today though, the sounds made Sarah excited. She walked up and down the fence line trying to catch a glimpse somehow of what was making these noises but to no avail. From that day on at certain times of the day she would hear these noises and would sit listening intently by the fence. She did not know what made these sounds but they made her very happy and so this would become a part of Sarah’s daily routine and she would look forward to it.
Then one day as she sat listening to the sounds that made her happy, a wind storm came. The sound of the wind drowned out the sounds on the other side of the fence and they started to become distant. Sand was blowing through the air and Sarah could hear the sound of objects being blown over. She took shelter and listened to the wind from inside her box. After the storm passed Sarah stepped outside again and walked along the side of the fence to listen for signs of activity. It was very quiet. As she was walking she noticed that there was a hole where a knot had been blown out of the fence, just at her eye level! She peered through the knot hole and surveyed the view on the other side. She looked through there and saw some things that were laughing and playing. It made her so happy that she started to whistle and her tail went straight. She started dancing and prancing up and down with her feet. She didn’t know what they were but she sure liked them. Just about then Yvonne came out and asked “what are you looking at Sarah Pig?”. Sarah Pig thought to herself I don’t know what they are but they sort of look like you only smaller. Yvonne went over and looked over the fence and said “oh you’re looking at the children”. Children, that’s what they are, wonderful children. Sarah Pig wished she had children. Everyday Sarah Pig would go outside and watch the children. They would make her very happy. She looked forward to seeing them everyday. When she was let into the back yard she would run over and watch the children play. Then one day Sarah rushed out of the house when Yvonne opened the door and ran to the fence to watch the children, but they weren’t there. Sarah Pig thought, they’ll come soon but they did not come. For three days Sarah waited for them but they did not come. Someone took the children Sarah thought, where could they have gone to. She missed the children. On the fourth day Sarah looked through the fence and they weren’t there again. Sarah thought to her self, I’ve got to find the children. Something has happened to them. Sarah knew she was not to go out the front door but she thought this was an emergency, a matter of finding the children. So Sarah Pig went out the front door when it was left ajar. She went out very quickly so Gene and Yvonne wouldn’t know. Sarah Pig started to walk up and down the street. She didn’t know where to start but she thought she would just walk around until she found the children. She started to walk down the sidewalk and people would laugh and point at her. She didn’t think that she was any stranger looking than they were. Pretty soon Sarah got on to the Boulder Highway. The cars were going very fast and she had never seen so many cars before. She had ridden in Gene and Yvonne’s car before when she went to the veterinarian to get her feet trimmed and her shots. How was she going to get across this highway? As she stepped off the curb cars started honking and people hollering. “Get that pig off the highway.” Pretty soon she heard a clang clang clang clang. Then horns honking, red lights blinking, gates going down and this big black thing with silver things behind raced in front of her. What in the world is that thing. Sarah Pig finally got away from that turmoil and started to walk down a street. She then heard the same voices that were behind the fence. She heard the children. They were behind a tall fence with wire on top of it. There were big people hollering at the little children, telling them to get in line, get ready and be quiet. Sarah didn’t think she liked the way the big people were treating the children. Sarah went around and found a door. Next to the door she saw the beginning of two words: elem & scho with a bush covering up the rest of the letters. Sarah saw the door was open so she decided to go in. She was going to rescue those little children. Sarah Pig walked inside just as a loud bell went off and hurt her ears. She went down the hallway until she found a classroom door. Sarah Pig walked through. There were a lot of children in this room. They started to giggle. The big person was up at the front of the class with her back to the children writing on a big black board. Sarah Pig walked right into that classroom and went to the first student and snorted that she was there to rescue them. That child patted her on the head and giggled. She went to the next person and the next and they all patted her on the head. Sarah liked that. The big person said “will you kids quit giggling”. “Who’s making that snorting noise?” asked the teacher. Who ever is making that noise had better quit, but it continued. The teacher turned around and then squealed. “What’s that swine doing in here?”. Sarah Pig didn’t know what a swine was but she knew she didn’t want anything to do with it. The big person told her to get out of the room. Sarah Pig thought, that person doesn’t want her to rescue those children. Pretty soon the teachers and the janitors were chasing her down the hallway. The children looked out of the doorways and watched and laughed as she was being chased. “Go little piggy, go little piggy” they all shouted. The door was open at the end of the hall so Sarah ran straight for the open door. Just as she went through it she got caught up in a net held by a big guy in a blue uniform. They threw her in a cage. Inside the cage were three dogs. Sarah was very sad. This was not the place she wanted to be. She wanted to be in with the children as they needed her. The two dogs on the other side of the pen made fun of her. Hey flat nose you don’t look much like a dog to me. Hey curly tail, curly tail. Flat nose flat nose they kept taunting her. You’re fat like a pig. Sarah Pig thought to herself, dogs are not as smart as they’re cracked up to be. Of course I have a flat nose and a curly tail and I’m fat because I am a pig. Sarah Pig was placed in a very cold cell all by herself with some water and some sort of food that she could not recognize. She was sitting in the corner when she heard two familiar voices. Yvonne and Gene came and looked into the pen where Sarah was sitting all forlorn. Sarah perked up and she was so excited that she whistled through her bottom teeth. ??
?My people are here.” Gene and Yvonne took Sarah Pig home. That night Gene and Yvonne watched Sarah Pig on the news. The next day Yvonne and Gene gave Sarah some packages. Sarah opened them up and inside was a brand new leather harness and a leash. They put the harness and the leash on Sarah and took her out the front door. The first time she had been out the front door, except when she escaped. They walked around the block and there were the children playing. Sarah thought to herself, they must have listened to her after all because they let the children loose. The ice cream man came by and Gene and Yvonne bought her and the kids all ice cream. All the children giggled and laughed and told her what a fun pig she was at school. Sarah Pig loved the children and she loved them being there. Every Saturday Yvonne and Gene would walk Sarah over to see the children and they would have ice cream together. Sarah was very happy after that and never got bored again.
