Introduction
Stephen Bardy, Executive Director
Imagine a book that is filled with stories and poems written by kids who love animals. Writing gives us the chance to use our imagination, to be creative, to explore our deepest thoughts and feelings, and to discover the gifts and talents we have inside.
Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is proud to present original works that tell how the young authors are feeling in their lives and thinking about the world around them. The writings and artwork are truly from the heart and strive to portray the hands-on experiences with shelter pets and knowledge gained from educational speakers during our weeklong Shelter Friends Summer Camps. You will not find these imaginative and creative ideas anywhere else.
Cathy Houde and Diane Anderson, in collaboration with Jolly Time Books authors Karen S. McGowan and Dennis E. McGowan, headed up this endeavor. Our campers contributed a wide variety of works, from humorous to inspiring to deeply personal, to share their fun experiences.
Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando educates, shelters, places, and heals pets and their families with compassionate, responsible care maintained to the highest professional standards. We create more caring communities by promoting happier, healthier pets and their families.
I hope you enjoy the stories and poems that our summer camp participants have put together for you. I encourage you to support our continuing positive community outreach programs.
Your support of Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando goes directly to helping pets in need. Whether it is finding a dog or cat a new forever home, providing low cost vet services, or helping to prevent pet homelessness through our spay/neuter program, Pet Alliance’s goal is to have happier and healthier pets in Central Florida.

This camp has been great! I learned so many things such as you have to give police dogs 12 weeks of training. I had a great exeperience and I defiently want to come back to the camp and volunteer next year!
Today the police came in and showed the class there police dog. We went outside and they showed us the dog comandes and a little bit of training. The dog was very well trained and he was so cute. I learned that it takes 12 weeks to train the dog. A part that I thought that was very interesting was when the policeman wore the bite proof jacket and pants and the police woman told the dog to bite the man. It was so cool! It was a really cool demonstration!
Today Miss Sara brought two of her dogs, she brought her small dog ginger. She is very scared and she gets nervous. But when you get to know her she can calm down. I also met two cats that I really liked. The first one was named Jada and she was very cute. The next one didn’t have a name but she looked a lot like my cat at home. I also looked at the cats in the cages. The kittens were very playful and cute and I wish I could adopt all of them.
Today I saw cats and dogs. I have two cats so I was really exited to go to the cat room. Another thing I really enjoyed was givin the dog a bath. I have never given a dog a bath before, so it was new to me. The cats were really friendly and they were really cute!

First day of camp was amazing! When we did rotations first was training. The dog we where tranings name was Rocco. Rocco whas a very nervous puppy. after about 5 tricks he was done. So then we whent to cat room next. There where a lot of kittens because it was kitten seson. My favorit cats were Tabby (orange tabby cat), Blocks, Senaa, and Kite. The final rotation was dog wash. We washed Sasha today. I was on bandanna duty. I selected my favrite bandanna and tied it on the dog. When rotations was done it was lunch time We ate and whatched a movie. After the movie and lunch we did crafts. We colored Paw Prints and made decorations to help promote adoption. We are going to get a presentation soon today. friday we are going to Sea World. I cant wait! Also toomorow we have to dress like in the 80’s. Thats all for today!
Lulu: 80’s
Second day of camp was amazing! Today we got a presentation about orange county animal services. When we did rotations, in the cat room I was playing with kittens when I noticed a tabby cat, I found out his name was ginger and he’s very frienly. And I love his purrsonality! he’s frendly with dogs and young kids! I told my mom about him and were going to look at him tommorow. hopefully we’ll adopt him! That all for now!
Adopt Me!
Third day of camp was so fun! The presotation for today is police k-9 unit. They showed us how the dogs behaved. Max might be getting adopted! I visited Ginger again. We made cat mobiles today. I put mines in Sweeties cage. The kittens are very destructive!

Today is only the second day of camp, and I already have a special bond with a beautiful black cat named Luna! She had stunning green eyes, and super soft fur. Luna is small and quaint, with small, delicate paws. She loves to just relax in my lap, and sleep.

Today was so much fun! I met two dogs today, LuLu and Ginger. LuLu got a bath today and got a mohawk. We said she looked like a rockstar! I will come back next summer for all these fun laughs again!
