  Chapter 1

The sky is a bright azure, and in the distance you can hear the sound of somebody chopping wood. For as far as the eye can see beautiful plains consisting of grass and rock, and mountains surround the entire property. Michael looks up from what he’s doing, sweat beading on his forehead, taking out a rag from his pocket and wiping his brow. He has his shirt off, and has it wrapped around his waist, as he continues to use the old Axe that used to belong to his grandfather.

He lives off the land, enjoying the solitude and quiet of nature, spawning young animals that include chickens and a couple of pigs. Every few hours he begins to mine the property, looking for any signs of diamond deposits, but not exactly surprised when he doesn’t find any. Pushing his blond hair out of his eyes, he feels the makings of a 5:00 shadow appearing on his face, and knows that it’s about time to go into town to get a shave and a haircut. Michael only goes into town for the occasional supply, bartering with the mob villagers, and bringing back only what he needs to survive.

Walking over to his favorite pig, he feeds him a limited amount of food to sustain his life essence, leaving the rest to spread about to the other animals. Looking down at the axe, he knows that this is his lifeline to cutting down trees and keeping his family farm warm on these chilly evenings.

Lifting the logs five at a time in his hands, he brings them over to the window and tosses them onto the dirt floor of his basement. Looking up at what each of his generation built on this land, he is still amazed to see that the entire structure is made of stone, which comes in handy when there is a storm in the area. This place had seen its fair share of battles with the elements, and had stood the test of time over and over again.

After 3 hours of continually chopping the wood and putting it into the window, he finally decides that a break is in order. To this end, he begins to place blocks, making what could only constitute as a limited supply of water, but more than enough to keep him and his animals going for a few days.

Being a man, he had taken over the family farm, still burdened by the images and nightmares that he has every night without fail. It is the same thing every time, and he hears his older brother screaming for him to hide under the bed. This is soon followed by a crashing against the window, and then he dares to look out from under the bed, only to see a very bright red light shining in his face. His brother is never found, but each night Michael relives that moment, as if it was just the other day. Even now, he perceives brief flashes of what happened, but it is so disjointed that he just can’t make any substance out of it.

Bending down, he pats his favorite pig Amaral “You have been a constant companion and friend.” He knows that giving it a name was probably a bad idea, because eventually he would have to do something so distasteful, but it wasn’t like he hadn’t done it before.

After dinner, he cleans the dishes and goes into the living room, taking down a book that a local had written, opening the pages and delving into the very idea that a diamond ore could be found. It was said that only a person endowed with a silk touch would be even able to find the elusive diamonds that everybody coveted. The pages are threadbare, as Michael has been reading the same book, never venturing into any other one that currently fills the shelves.

As always, he begins to feel the toll of the day weigh heavily on his shoulders, until finally he can’t bear to keep his eyes open any longer. Of course, he falls asleep and begins to dream about that fateful night, and once again he sees that bright red light keeping him from seeing the truth right in front of his face. He believes that one day he will finally see the reality of what happened, although a small part of him thinks that not knowing might be a good thing.

“Michael… Michael…can you hear me?” This has never happened before, and he had only heard rumors about ghosting, but had never believed any of the tales. He thought that this was just old men talking out of turn, and it was very rare to come across anybody who had experienced such a thing. “You have got to listen to me, as I don’t have a lot of time to talk.” The voice was sounding like it was coming from inside a tunnel, but in the back of his mind he could feel a familiarity, but he just couldn’t put his finger on what it was.

“I’m listening, but I must ask why you have come to me?” There was a momentary pause of silence and Michael really believed that this was just a product of his imagination.

“I can’t get into this, only to say that the Ender dragon was responsible for what happened to your brother.” Michael had heard of the Ender dragon, and the stories of how it dwells in the end world, but once again all of this was hearsay and nothing else. “You must keep an open mind, and it is time for you to seek out vengeance. Tomorrow morning, you are to take what you can carry, and start your quest going north.” There was nothing after that, and no matter how much he tried to plea for the voice to come back, nothing happened.

His eyes snapped open, his body drenched in sweat, and his heart beating so fast in his chest that he thought it was going to leap from it. Questioning if what he had heard was actually real or something else entirely, he got up and started to pace back and forth in the room.

“I can’t possibly leave my home, just because some kind of voice came to me in my dream.” His thought was interrupted by what he remembered his father telling him about what lie north of his prope
rty. It was said that a world of ice and snow could be reached after many days of walking, and there was only one person who had ever taken on the challenge of finding out. His name was Wallace, and he had come across this crazy old man from time to time when he was in town.

Continuing to think about what had happened, he finally saw the sun rising and knew that it was time to make a decision one way or the other. Taking a deep breath, he knew that he could never rest, not until he found out the truth, and this was the one breakthrough that had gave him some kind of guidance that he had never had before.

Picking up a small bag, he filled it with whatever food he had left in the cupboards, along with bottles of water from the spring that he had built just yesterday. Knowing that he would need something to protect himself if the need arose, he took the only thing of true value, which was the axe.

Walking out of the house, he looked back one last time, not knowing if he was going to be able to return to this place ever again. It was possible that this would lead to his demise, but not going was not an option. At least north would take him through the town of villagers, and maybe he would have the chance to finally speak to Wallace and really listen for the first time. Nobody was exactly giving him the attention that he wanted, however, this was a new day and that was about to change.

  Chapter 2

There was nary a cloud in the sky, and he began his fateful journey to the north, taking one step in front of the other and still wondering if he was doing the right thing.

The boots that he had bartered for the last time he was in town was made for this hard and unforgiving environment, but if he were really going to have to go into the biome of ice and snow, he would need clothing suited for such a place.

His trek took him about 2 hours, but this was not a trip that he had not taken before. Every time that he entered among the locals, he would see their disapproving stares, and know that the curse of his family was still with him. It was believed that his great grandfather betrayed his partner and left him for dead in the middle of nowhere. This claim was never substantiated, but that didn’t mean that the stigma of that supposed betrayal didn’t follow him and his family.

“I wasn’t expecting you for a few more days.” Jake the owner of the only store in town had looked at Michael as his own son, taking it upon himself to make sure that the young man was taking care of himself. After all, he owed Michael’s father a debt of gratitude that he wasn’t sure he would ever be able to pay back. “I’m afraid I won’t have your supplies, until at least tomorrow.”

Michael wasn’t concerned about that, laying down his green satchel, and sitting down with the look of somebody that had something on his mind. “I don’t suppose you’ve seen Wallace around.” The very name made Jake cringe, but then he pointed into the direction of a man muttering underneath his breath over by the window. Michael nodded his thanks, and then went over and stood behind them, when everybody had done everything in their power to stay away from him.

“Can’t see it…don’t want to know this…bad things are going to happen.” It didn’t make any sense, and then suddenly he turned with his eyes wide with recognition, grabbing onto Michael’s lapel and pulling him towards him. He was so close that he could smell the liquor on his breath, and saw wildness in his eyes. “Don’t go…you have no idea what you are getting into…the lotus is blooming…the tundra is all ice, but below there are lies...lies…lies…lies.” Michael pulled away, and knew instinctively that he wasn’t going to get any answers from this man.

“Jake, I will be away from the farm for a while, and I was wondering if you could look in on it and feed the animals.” He trusted Jake with his life, and maybe that was because he was always around when he was growing up, almost like a surrogate uncle. “I wouldn’t ask you, but you know your way around and have been there before.”

“I won’t ask what you are doing, only to say that I will be more than happy to stop by from time to time.” Jake had seen that look on Michael’s face before, and knew that there was no chance of him changing his mind, even though he had no idea what he was going to do.

Michael found a local merchant, and bartered with him for some warm clothes and winter boots. Unfortunately, he had only a couple of pieces of Emerald left, and gave up one piece to have what he needed to make the escapade.

Michael didn’t say anything else, walking with purpose back outside, until he was at the edge of town. The only time that he had ventured further than this was when his brother Nicholas had dared him to go to the nearby cave and get a look at the spiders that made that cave their home. He was terrified beyond words, but had seen them skittering along the walls and spawning in the darkness of the cave. When he tripped, he thought for sure that the spiders were going to grab him into their web, and actually heard the movement of their eight legs getting closer with each breath he took. Looking back, he saw a black mass converging, and then his brother appeared out of nowhere, grabbing his hand and pulling him out of the cave into the light.

That was when he considered Nicholas a hero in his eyes, and from that day forward he began to follow him around like a puppy dog. They were best of friends, and he often thought that he would grow up to be that kind of man, someone that would do whatever was right and be damned the consequences.

  Chapter 3

To go into the wintry landscape was almost a foregone conclusion that you would never return again. He began to think that if Wallace could do it, then why wasn’t it possible that he could to.

Michael had everything he needed in a satchel, and instead of procrastinating any longer; he began to walk away, making sure not to look back, just in case seeing the town disappear would make him change his mind.

He was starting to feel the pain in his legs, and it had been a few hours, which meant that it was going to get dark soon. What he needed was shelter, and he began to pick up blocks and make the bare bones, before going into the words and using his grandfather’s axe to bring back the wood that he would need to make the structure sound. It was hard work, but eventually he had exactly what he needed, as well as the fire to keep warm. Over the years, he had become quite proficient at fishing, and while he was cutting down the wood, he had seen in the distance a river running nearby.

Everybody knew that you had to be inside somewhere when the sun went down, because the nocturnal monsters were known to come out and hunt during these times. Michael fashioned a piece of wood into a makeshift fishing pole, using the blade of the axe to whittle it down to the proper size. It didn’t take him very long to capture three fish on his line, pulling them in and dragging them back to his camp over his shoulder. He skinned and deboned all three of them using the blade of the axe, eventually cooking them over the open fire and giving him much needed health and wellness before moving on. Using only one bottle of water, he still had four separate ones ready to go. Michael was very aware of how to ration, as he had been doing it for all of his adult life.

After he finished, he made sure to extinguish the fire, because it would only attract unwanted visitors. Pulling one of the blocks in behind him, he dragged it into position, using all of the energy in his brawny and muscular arms to make sure that he was well protected. Staying in a perpetual state of readiness was paramount to survival, and he was only able to sleep soundly for a few minutes before jolting fast awake. This might not be conducive to a good night’s sleep, but it was the only way that he would feel safe and secure. In fact, he had the axe in the palm of his hand, just in case something slithered in to join him.

It was a long night and he awoke with his black parka snug around his body, although he could already feel the heat of the day penetrating the interior of his shelter. Laying there and listening to everything around him, he became quite attuned to the sounds of nature, yet there was something unfamiliar to his naked ear. Something was out there, as he could hear the sound of scuffling nearby, and then watched as something or someone was trying desperately to move the block from the entrance.

/>   Unfortunately, the block that he had situated in front of the entrance wasn’t going to budge, at least not without a whole lot of manpower behind it. He had to smile, hearing somebody grunting and groaning trying to break into his new home for the evening. Eventually, they gave up, but he wasn’t going to take any chances and stayed exactly where he was for at least another hour.

It was time to make his exit, putting his best foot forward and using the leverage of his own body to push the huge block out of his way. Squeezing out through the opening, the sun temporarily blinded him, and then his vision began to clear enough to see a young woman with multicolored hair kneeling down where his fire used to be.

Michael balled up his fist, well aware of the fact that the axe was left in the shelter. “Who are you, and what exactly do you want?” He never took his eyes off her, or the shiny sword in her hand. If she wanted a fight, he wasn’t going to go down so easily.

“I was about to ask you the same thing, though it appears that we are going in the same direction. I wouldn’t even consider proposing this, but with the uncertainty out there, I would imagine that there is strength in numbers.” She was wearing armor, and Michael could see that she had knowledge of battle, which was something that might be needed on this journey. His only problem was that he wasn’t sure if he could trust her, especially considering that she had purposely tried to break into his shelter.

“You bring up a valid point, but why were you trying to break into my shelter?” He was hoping that he would catch her off guard, and was trying to gauge her reaction to his question.

“I thought that it was deserted, until I heard movement from inside and decided to stick around to see who was going to emerge.” It was a logical answer, but that didn’t negate the fact that the hairs on Michael’s arms were standing on end. “I’m not going to force myself on you, but I think it would be in your best interest to have somebody like me along for the ride.” The young woman was certainly able to think quickly on her feet, but there really was something in her eyes that made him wonder if taking her with him was a good idea.
