Read Being Pretty Page 7

Chapter 7: Epilogue

I was in the bathroom, fixing myself up for the stupid ball that my mom is still insisting I attend.

Though I don’t want to do it, it’s the only way that my mom will let me move back in after our fight, so frankly I have no choice but to attend it.

As I was fixing my mascara, I heard a familiar voice that I had been hoping to hear.

  “Hello darling!”

I looked above me to see Darren smiling down at me.

“I was wondering when you’d come.” I told him.

“Sorry I took so long.” He apologized. “You’d be surprised how many teens cry in the bathroom every day. It’s been a busy week.”

I think I have a pretty good idea of it, seeing as I used to be one of those teens.

  I nodded. “I could imagine.”

He chuckled. “So. You did it, you made Shane fall in love with you, good job.”

I gave him a small curtsey.

“That means, you get your wish, you can wish for whatever you want.”

  “Personality fix?” I tried.

He shook his head. “Sorry. That’s something that you’ll need to fix on your own, I can’t wish up a good personality, but you certainly look prettier than the last time we met.”

  “I figured as much.”

“Sorry darling, there has to be something else though, right?”

If I can’t fix myself, I can make the most important person to me to be happy.

“Yeah, I wish that Shane could forget about all that happened. That he doesn’t have to remember what I did to him, and that I ever dated Chase or anything…just that he forgets the past few weeks so that we can he can be completely happy. I don’t want him to doubt me.”

  “Done.” Darren beamed.

  “Just like that?”

  He nodded.

I looked in the mirror to see that I looked the same. “Why am I still pretty?” I wondered.

“You get to keep your looks.” He informed me.

I didn’t know that that was a part of the deal.

“Well then Darren, do you think you could do me a favor? As friends…and just keep this between the two of us?” I asked.

He raised an eyebrow. “What exactly do you have in mind?”

A smile broke out on my face.

This is going to be good.

Collective gasps echoed throughout the crowd as I ran onto the floor where everyone was.

“Sorry I’m late!” I shouted, purposefully making a scene as I ran to Preston, putting my arm through his.

“What do you think you- aah!” Preston jumped back a few feet when he got a look at me.

“Something wrong?” I asked innocently, before smirking at him.

“Y-You-Your face…” He stared in horror.

I smiled a fake smile at him, hopefully he’ll never be interested in me again.

My mom ran onto the floor and grabbed me, dragging me off. “Sorry! We’ll be right back!”

  “Problem?” I asked sweetly.

  “Where’s your face!” She hissed.

I pointed to my face. “Right here.”

“I mean the non-repulsive one! Where is your pretty face? I thought you’d blossomed.”

I raised an eyebrow at her. “What’s this? Are you embarrassed about me again?”

“Anyone in the right mind would be embarrassed if their daughter came to a ball looking like this.” She snapped.

I smiled. “Well good, that’s what I was going for.”

She’s not going to be making me do these anymore.

  “Just…just go home.” She muttered.

I shook my head. “I have some unfinished business here, but I’ll see you at judging.”

With that, I walked past her, back onto the floor and I could feel the whole crowd’s eyes on me.

“Hey Preston.” I put my arm through his. “You ready to win?”

“I-you…oh my God.” He whispered, looking scared and disgusted.

  This is turning out perfectly.

When the ball was finally over, people were out of there as fast as they could be.

I smiled to myself running back into the bathroom and locking the door.

  “Psst! Darren!” I hissed.

  “Right here.”

I whirled around to be face to face with him and I smiled. “Thank you so much for making me ugly for this, my mom will definitely not ask me to do the ball next year, and I’m pretty sure that Preston is over me now.”

  He laughed, “You’re pretty cunning.”

“Thanks.” I beamed. “I try my best.”

“Well, I’d better go, the crying girls never stop.” He waved his hand over me.

I looked in the mirror to see that I was pretty again.

“Thanks Darren, you’re the best.” I said, turning to him, but he was already gone.

I went over and unlocked the door, walking back over to where my bags were and I changed out of the dress back into my blue jeans and black tank top.

  “Hey there.”

I turned to see Shane looking at me with a smile as he leaned on the doorframe.

I smiled, running over to him and wrapping my arms around him.

“Nice stunt you pulled back there.” He said, picking up my bag for me.

I chuckled. “At least now I won’t be in any more balls.”

“Aren’t girls supposed to like this kind of thing?” He wondered.

“Puh-lease.” I scoffed. “Nobody should have to do that. Ever.”

He shrugged. “It didn’t look too bad.”

“After you try being in a dress that’s two sizes too tight and having to walk around in painful heels all day, then give me a call.”

He chuckled, “Do you want to come with me or are you going with your mom?” He asked.

I raised an eyebrow. “That woman would kill me after what I did today, I’ll go with you.”

I took my bag off of his shoulder. “And you didn’t have to carry this for me.” I said as we stopped next to my mom’s car and I put the bag outside her door, hopefully she won’t be mad enough to leave it.

  “What can I say, I’m a gentleman.”

“Gentlemen don’t ride motorbikes.” I pointed out, as he handed me a helmet.

He smirked at me. “Sexy ones do.”

I couldn’t help it as a smile spread across my face at that. “You’re cocky.”

  He chuckled. “You love it.”

“No, I love you.” I corrected him.

He leaned down and kissed my forehead. “I love you too Rosebud.”
