“Good.” She turned to Kendis, “Is there anything you want to tell him, Honey?”

“Yes. If he doesn’t follow your instructions to the letter I’ll turn him upside down and throw him off the nearest balcony,” he said. His voice was serious.

They had gotten down the hall and could see Charles. His hand was raised as if he was about to knock on S’tella’s door. Kendis and Jade stayed out of sight.

“Move your guard,” hissed Kendis softly.

Montford, his pasty face even pastier, called out as he walked towards him, “Ah, Charles, I need you to go to the roof and see what’s wrong with the gun. It’s not working.”

Charles, looking puzzled, hesitated, then shrugged, and said, “Sure, Caine.” He started down the opposite hall, where he made a right turn. They heard a door slam.

They went up to S’tella’s door, Kendis opening it before they got there.

Montford made as if to take off down the hall after Charles but Kendis looked at him and he sat down hard on the floor, quaking. He was about to wet himself. He was secreting puddles of cold sweat.
