“Fasten it!” growled Kendis, watching as the pasty skinned man hurriedly closed his fasteners.

He turned to Jade, “Where are the children? Are they far?”

“Not far but there’s an armed guard on his way to their door right now. He’s ostensibly there to keep S’tella from getting out.”

She thought for a moment. “I know how to get him away without you having to bang him around or anything.” She was thinking about those poor little scared children. No sense in frightening them even more.

She looked at Montford who was shaking and trembling, standing next to the bed. She was still holding Kendis’ hand so she picked him up, setting him down in front of them. She stared at him, eyebrows lowered. She was not aware that her eyes were glowing too, the whites having filled in with deep, dark brown, with just a hint of green and a gold speck or two - with a tinge of blue, but Montford cringed when she looked at him.

“We’re going to leave this room and walk to S’tella’s room where she and her two small - and very frightened - children are. You’ll tell Charles to go to the roof and see what’s wrong with the weapon. Then you’ll sit quietly down in the hall once he’s gone. Do you understand?” she asked in polite tones.

  He gave a jerky nod.

He didn’t ask how she’d known the guard’s name. He could no longer think coherently at all. He felt he was spiraling down into madness.
