  Chapter 15 – Saving Grace

  St Mark’s Square

Grace Flynn’s broken body lay in the center of Mark’s Square wrapped in the wire of her mechanical wings. A few feet away the charred remains of Varney smoldered in the setting sun.

Daedalus slid down the rope dropped from the Pendragon as it hovered over the square below. He rushed to Grace and began to gently untangle the wings about her charred body. Tears were streaming from his eyes and he held Grace in comfort. The woman groaned in pain and too weak to speak.

Flamel soon joined his friend at Grace’s side and he looked distraught as well. Daedalus looked suddenly at Flamel.

“The stone, you must use the stone.” Daedalus pleaded.

“This is not your decision to make. Death might bring her peace now that she has exacted revenge.” Flamel advised his friend.

“I will not watch her die in this place; this is not how it shall end for Grace Flynn!” Daedalus screamed. “You will use the stone to save her!”

“I understand your wish to save this young woman, but we are not Gods, old friend.”

“If this were Esmeralda would you stand on your moral high ground?” Daedalus spat.

Flamel was at a loss for words. He then silently pulled a small chain from underneath his shirt. Upon it hung a silvery stone, to which he chanted strange spidery words. The stone flashed and he then placed it upon Grace’s charred forehead. The woman stopped writhing in pain and soon fell into a deep sleep.

“We must get her back to Paris; this shard will only ease her pain and will not stop death if it has come for her. Only the Philosopher’s Stone might save her now.” Flamel informed Daedalus.

“Then we best get going.” Daedalus commanded.

With the help of the Pendragon’s crew Grace was gently taken aboard. Admiral Seagers promised to make for Paris with all the speed his vessel could muster. It did not take long for the Pendragon’s engines to kick in high gear and force the vessel to sustain its maximum speed.

In the guest cabin Daedalus sat vigilant at Grace’s side as she slept. He refused both food and water as the flight to Paris was well underway. Flamel gave up trying to get his friend to rest and found a comfortable chair for himself and soon fell asleep.
