Read Dinner Party Page 4

Writing this down I realize I’m not sure if Epictus had finished his story. I felt a little heartbroken to realize that I must have at some point fallen asleep at the table cutting the party short… well maybe not short, various times someone would comment that it was late and there would be no hard feelings if I said I was ready to sleep. I remember asking for another story and then leaning forward with my elbows on the table. The next thing I remember is waking up in my bed, and seeing a note on the night stand from Marcus thanking me for the wonderful dinner and conversation, and hoping that I slept well.

What woke me up was my son knocking at the door. Walking down the stairs in the robe I pulled over my suit I’d slept in. I walked through the front room and I cracked opened the door to avoid him seeing the dinner table set or me dressed up. Luckily he didn’t ask any question. He did look a little suspicious of my behavior, but I asked what I could do for him and he said that he and Marie were going to go out of town for the weekend and were wondering if I could watch Jenny. I quickly agreed and it wasn’t until I said goodbye and closed the door that I realized the dilemma; I was almost certain there would be another dinner party the next weekend, how was I going to somehow pull it off without getting Jenny involved?
