Read Lexa Page 3

  ***

Lexa watched as the girl lit the candles near her. She had the body of her son laying in the middle of a circle of candles and flowers. His little face looked peaceful and unafraid. She felt herself feel happy for the first time in a long time. Finally, she was going to have her son back in her arms.

“He will need some help after, but he will be alive in all aspects,” The woman said, putting her hand on Grant’s head. She whispered some words Lexa didn’t understand. Lexa felt the room grow cold, like icy fingers on her skin and she felt the air come from her lungs. It was like the whole room was being sucked of its air. She held her ground and watched the necromancer do her job.

Then everything stopped, and the room went quiet. Lexa glanced from the necromancer to her child. She shook her head. “He’s been gone too long,” she said.

“What does that mean?” Lexa almost yelled.

“We can’t bring him back. Not like this.”

“Then how?” Lexa took a step towards the woman.

“I don’t have that kind of power and neither do you.” She stood and glanced at Eryx. “I’m sorry.”

He nodded and sent her from the room. Lexa just stared at the body of her son. He was gone and there was nothing she could do about it.

‘You promised,” she whispered. She felt her anger building as she thought of everything she’d done. She’d killed a woman for no reason. And that woman was right. They never were going to give her what she wanted.

Lexa felt her heart beating in her chest and closed her eyes. She couldn’t leave it like this. She felt the air around her shift and her sense of self disappear. The pressure on her body lightened and she opened her eyes.

Abby was standing in front of her. “Did you understand what I said?” She asked.

Lexa watched the woman, confused. “What? How did this happen?”

“You made it happen. I was wondering what it would take.” Abby smiled a small smile.

“I haven’t done that before,” Lexa said looking around her to make sure it was really.

“You’re a time mover. It’s your gift.” She grabbed Lexa’s arm. “We don’t have much time.”

Abby pulled her into the hut and into a chair. She grabbed her hand before sitting down herself. The little girl was watching the whole thing take place. Lexa looked at her. She was so full of fire and power and she probably had no idea.

“You won’t remember this, but it’s important.” Abby grabbed Lexa’s hand and a small dagger that was laying on the table. She cut Lexa’s hand and then reached for the girls. The girl tried to pull back, but Abby wouldn’t let her. “Bree, you have to do this.” Abby cut the girl’s hand and then placed Lexa’s on top.

“Bound as one, you are now. Bound as one you are till undone,” Abby said and then released their hands. She grabbed Lexa and pulled her back to where they were standing not long ago.

She smiled. “I can see the future, and I can see your part in it just as I can see what will happen after this point.” Lexa watched her. “I will die today and you will make a choice. That same choice will bring you to another who will save you from it.”

  “I don’t understand,” Lexa said.

“You will. Now it’s time for me to die. I only ask one thing.”

  “What?” Lexa said.

“Don’t lose yourself completely to them. Keep your eyes open to who you are. Travel the dark path and come to the light one when you are ready.” The woman said.

“What’s your name?” Lexa wanted to know the name of the woman she was making this kind of promise to.

“Abby and that girl in there is Bree.” She hesitated. “You aren’t going to kill her too, are you?”

  “No,”

“Then let's get on with this,” Abby closed her eyes.

Lexa dropped her gaze to the ground. She didn’t want to do this, but she didn’t have a choice. If she was going to see Grant again, she would have to. She had to take her life and hope she was wrong. Lexa bit her lip and closed her eyes. She opened them and saw Abby laying on the ground, blood running from a wound in her neck. Lexa looked at her hand holding a large dagger. She didn’t understand what had happened. She closed her eyes and opened them to Eryx watching her. He had his hand on her face and she was crying.

Grant’s body was still laying in the middle of the room and she swallowed hard. It was a dream, a want she had to change the past. None of this could be undone.

Lexa walked back to her room and sat in the window seat. She put her head on the cold glass and closed her eyes. She was now bound to Eryx in a way that would never let her be unbound, but she was also free of the pain that was Grant’s death. He was gone, but she was starting a new life. One that would let her take out the frustration of everything on anyone she chose.

  6 months Later

Lexa walked down the hallway to see what all the commotion was about. The guards weren’t where they should be. She kept going towards the sound of fighting until she could pinpoint where it was coming from. Lexa watched the door until it swung open.

A woman with blonde hair was standing in front of her with bright blue eyes that smiled with light and goodness. Lexa didn’t know what to do. She had fallen so far from where she started.

“I’ve been looking for you,” the blonde said. Lexa watched her in confusion. “We don’t have much time. You have to come with me.”

“No, my home is here,” Lexa said breaking her gaze.

“That’s not true. All you’ve done is hurt people. We can change that.” The woman held her hand out to her. “You can come back from this. You can fight.”

  “I can’t.”

“You can. I’ll show you how, but you have to make the first step.” The blonde watched her. “My name is Hope.”

Lexa looked back at Hope’s eyes and felt safe. Like nothing was happening around her. She thought about all the damage she’d done and the pain she’d caused.

Don’t lose yourself completely to them. Keep your eyes open to who you are. Travel the dark path and come to the light one when you are ready. The voice was distinct and loud in her head. This was it. She was being given her choice. Lexa bit her lip and reached out. She slid her hand into Hopes and felt relieved. She’d made a choice that finally felt right.

They ran. They ran as though everything around them was coming down because it was. They ran through the building taking every step as fast as they could. Lexa felt like everything was going in slow motion.

Lexa slammed against the doors at the end of the hallway and felt the sunshine on her skin. She glanced back at Hope slightly behind her. They ran through the fenced area as others tore down the outside fencing and prisoners were spilling over it. She watched them and felt a surge of happiness. Even with all the bad things she’d done and the people she’d killed, this made sense. She followed the group and pulled Hope with her. Before long they were well beyond the viewpoint of the headquarters.

“Now the work begins,” Hope said with a smile.

“The work?” Lexa said watching her.

“There are groups all over the world saving people, helping others. Now we can too.”

“Is that why you wanted me to come?” Lexa crossed her arms.

“It’s not the only reason. You are important and someday, you will save us.” Hope walked past her and Lexa just thought about what she’d said. What if Lexa could be a person that helps someone? What if she could be more than a hurt person that pushed her hurt onto others? She could save people.

  She could save herself.
