Author’s Note
Heaven was a story I had actually written last year for a short story contest on the internet. While it didn’t win the contest after all, I found the story very intriguing and I knew that I had to share it. I wrote it around the time when my girlfriend and I were really getting into our relationship. I had seen the idea of “love” being portrayed in different forms of media, but I wanted to get my own understanding of what I thought love was. Ironically, I think the stories in this this collection focus in on the idea of love, although that wasn’t my intention.
Johanna: A Ghost Story is one of the many stories that I wrote that came out of an all-night read through of various scary stories on the internet known as Creepypasta. For this particular story, I wanted to have a heartwarming ending for this character, but for it to also show a dark truth about the world: We can’t always get what we want. It also seemed very interesting to write something from a ghost’s perspective as well.
A Letter was an interesting one to write. It wasn’t difficult to come up with an idea; the entire story had actually been completely thought out in my mind. The hard part was actually writing it down. Engulfed by all the Creepypasta I have gone though, I wanted to write one that didn’t have a happy ending.
Unstable Ground is the final story in this collection, and for good reason. With the other stories in this collection, they all carry a resonance of melancholy. This final story is almost like a glimmer of hope. Yes, there is a small resonance of misfortune upon Lucy, but life isn’t always going to be good to you. There is a balance between the good and bad things that happens in life. However, what does happen will enrich her life much more than she could ever imagine. I like the story of the young alchemist and Lucy, and I hope to explore those characters a little more in the future.
Afterword and Acknowledgements
For a long time, I thought I was going to end up with a collection of romance stories, which I felt very cautious about. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good romance story, but that wasn’t necessarily the theme that I wanted to have in this particular collection. If you look at it though, I would say that a theme that pops up in a lot of these stories (in a very twisted way) is “love”.
The title was a fun one to come up with. Initially, I wanted to put “Short Stories of an Unmediated Mind” but that would be a lie. I do take medication, but it’s for my heart. It’s a technicality, but I don’t want to say something that’s not entirely true. There are probably better titles that I could come up with, but those will be for other collection like these to come.
I write stories that I think I would enjoy reading, which is probably why I put a lot of pressure on myself. As long as I have a drive (and love) for writing, I’m going to keep doing it. So, thank you, if you are reading this now, for giving me a chance, and reading this book.
I must also give thanks to the four friends that I stated above: David, Mike, Maggy, and Lydia. It’s always fun Skyping with you guys and I’m never bored whenever all of us get together. Each one of you rock, and I mean that. An extra thanks to Lydia for looking over this and catching all of my mistakes. You are a life saver.
I must also give thanks to all of those who are friends with me on Facebook. Keep spreading the word about my stories; you all have been there for me in many ways.
